I am creating a website in FrontPage for a local service organization and I want to know if I need to only register a name, or do I also need to do webhosting? I have been looking at various sites and they seem to go hand in hand, but it seems a bit confusing. If someone could please clarify. Thank you.

Well, they are completly seperate things, but do go hand in hand with each other…
Web host, Think like Geocities web pages… that’s a free web hosting site… you can put what ever you want together and it’ll be on a web server at a link like
http://www.geocities/~username/now, you can get good web hosting and it’ll come up like that, or you can get both the web hosting (this basicly get’s your html files accessable oneline) and a host name, this is you own www.whatever.com and then you can point the www.whatever.com to goto the url for the site you put together… some sites that do both together you don’t even need to worry about that stuff about pointing the url, it’s already done for you…

If you are creating a web page for a business or organization, then they will probably want to have the site hosted with their domain name (if they have one already). If they do not have a domain name, they will need to register one. Then, you will have to decide where the site will be hosted. It’s easier to have the same company manage both the domain name registration and the web hosting but it’s not necessary. You can always update the domain registration info or transfer the domain. I have been using 1&1 (www.1and1.com) since they started up in the US a couple years ago and they are very reliable and resonably priced.

The domain name/URL of your webpage is only necessary if you want a website called www.mypage.com, which most people do.
Webhosting is having a server that contains all the pages, images, etc. for your website and will parse any php or asp files. Webhosting is always necessary, but you can get certain hosting for free. Some people use geocities, but it is limited and the free websites have large ads on the side. AtSpace is a good alternative, although you are not allowed to host files more than 200kb large on them.
If you do want to get a domain name (yourname.com), GoDaddy is the most popular place to get one. (I got mine there.) You can get a domain name for under $10. Then you can configure it to use either a different web host, or buy hosting from GoDaddy (I also got this for pretty cheap.)
